TRAIL Magazine / Leed's University Test Rates Granger's #1.
The May 2006 issue of Trail Magazine (the most popular hiking magazine in the U.K.) presents the results of lengthy tests on waterproofing products and ranked Granger's the best in both Wash-In and Spray-On Waterproofing. In fact, Granger's products restored the water repellency on a Gore-Tex XCR jacket to better than new condition. In terms of initial water repellency, Granger's restored the garments to a Spray Rating of 100 (Nikwax TX-Direct Wash-In rated 95). A more critial measurement focused on the durability of the treatments. Again, Granger's was best with our Spray-On Waterproofing for Synthetic Fabrics (a.k.a. XT Spray in the U.K.) whereas Nikwax TX-Direct Wash-In delivered the poorest result.)

OCC OUTDOOR May 2006
(Leading United Kingdom industry trade publication)
The proof of the pudding Trail Magazine’s world first test on re-proofing treatments was a brilliant coup for the market leading publication, and possibly chastening experience for the brands involved. The tests carried our by Leeds University’s Performance Clothing Research Group proved conclusively what many had suspected for a long time – that waterproof breathable garments don’t stay waterproof and breathable for that long, or at least not in those areas of the garment subject to significant wear and tear. Indeed, tests showed that re-proofing agents should be used regularly to keep garments in tip top order.

The findings must have been a bit of a blow for Nikwax. The brand, which is market leader in the UK , did poorly when compared to its principal rival Granger’s. Indeed, Nikwax, according to the test for longevity of performance, even finished behind the fabric conditioner Comfort. In a statement published in Trail, Nikwax pointed out that it doesn’t use fluorocarbons in its products, a swipe at Granger's and a reference to studies showing that some fluorocarbons are not environmentally friendly. Granger's was quick to point out that none of the chemicals used in its treatments contained the materials of specific concern. Meanwhile Storm, whose products failed to achieve 100% water repellence in the tests, told Trail that the range would be relaunched this month, and that their Air Cure Wash-In product, which failed especially badly, “will have increased its strength by 20%.” Alas, on the basis of the Trail research, even this boost in performance would still leave the product trailing its competitors.

It makes way too much sense!
Jason comments on Granger's Wash-In Waterproofing for Synthetics
"A lot of people have no idea that these types of products are so easy to use. With the rising cost of ski apparel, it makes way too much sense to cough up a few bucks to prolong the life of your gear."

Looks brand new!
Zenon comments on G-Wash Cleaner and Wash-In Waterproofing for Synthetics
"After washing my North Face Optimus jacket with Granger's, I was amazed how it came out--it looked brand new. I even think the replenished DWR is better than factory applied. Amazing results."

Impressed!
Andrew comments on Granger's G-Wash Cleaner
"Impressed! It got dried blood off the white part of my Columbia jacket. Looks brand new."

Men's Health Magazine: Longer Life Jacket
Jan/Feb 2005
STAY DRY > A high-tech jacket protects your from the harshest climates on the planet, but it may not survive your washing machine's spin cycle. Clean your jacket incorrectly and the breathable, waterproof fabric will sop up fluids like a frat boy at his first kegger.

Don't just throw your jacket in the wash with your sweat socks. Typical detergents interfere with waterproofing. Instead, use REI Revive II (4 oz, $4; rei.com). Then, while the fabric is damp, restore the waterproofing by squiting on some Granger's Spray-On Waterproofing for Synthetic Fabrics (10 oz, $13; www.grangersusa.com). Toss it in the dryer for about 30 minutes on medium-to-high heat and you're ready to battle the elements again.

If water doesn't bead on the surface, "it's time for a waterproofing treatment," say Dennis Lewon, Backpacker magazine's gear guru. "Usually, you have to treat a jacket about once a year."

SNEWS - Specialty News
June 28, 2004
“SNEWS® View: The competition in the market just heated up, big time. This can only be good for retailers as we suspect Nick Brown, owner of Nikwax ® , will see this as an affront and challenge to his current position as market leader. Nikwax ® has been resting on its laurels for too long now, so it will be interesting to watch what Brown begins cooking up in the magic cauldron in an attempt to hold onto the innovative edge. As for Watershed and Axis Outdoor now distributing Granger’s, we say simply, wow! We’ve heard from a number of key rep agencies already, indicating that the Watershed rep force of “A-level” agencies will remain intact, and that is only good for Granger’s. In addition, it is clear that Granger’s is already listening to and responding to input from its American partner, and that can only be good for both Granger’s and the North American consumer. If we were the betting sort -- and we do like to put our view out there on the speculation roulette wheel -- Axis Outdoor will soon be offering supplies that recondition siliconized fabrics, seal seams, recoat tent fabrics, and more. In fact, we’ll really go out on a limb here and speculate that Axis will likely make a play to become a one-stop-shop for all things fabric, footwear and repair...” Posted on SNEWS 06/28/2004

PRESS RELEASE: June 25, 2004
WATERSHED USA ANNOUNCES DISTRIBUTION AGREEMENT WITH GRANGER’S
EVERETT, WASH – Officials from Watershed USA are in the midst of an exciting transition and today announced their biggest news yet. First, the company has formed a new division with a wholly owned subsidiary, doing business as Axis Outdoor. Axis Outdoor will be responsible for the distribution, marketing, and brand management of the product side of Watershed’s business. Watershed USA will continue to specialize in fulfillment, back-office and supply chain support.

Officials from the company also announce that, beginning June 25, 2004, Axis Outdoor will become the North American distributor for Granger’s after-market waterproofing products.

The move will solidify Watershed USA/Axis Outdoor as the most experienced team in the after-market waterproofing category by uniting the company with the oldest name in the business, Granger’s (est. 1937). “This new partnership gives us a chance to bring new products to the market,” said Morrie Trautman, president of Watershed USA.

Granger’s has been looking to team up with a winning partner for the past two years, beginning with the hiring of Allen Slade, who was most recently with Patagonia Canada for 14 years. Slade was hired to research the North American market and find the path to success for Granger’s. That search brought Slade to Morrie Trautman and Mike Curtis, President and GM of Watershed USA respectively.

While Slade was researching the market for Granger’s, Chris Mork, who manages the customer service and product research teams at Watershed USA, was leading an 18-month project, in which he tested nearly every after-market waterproofing product available on the market today, and some that were still in development. Through this testing process, Mork found continually that Granger’s formulas performed exceptionally well. His tests were validated by SATRA, an independent European testing agency who ranked Granger’s on top.

Watershed USA/Axis Outdoor very much looks forward to catalyzing the Granger’s product line with its market-leading expertise.

Watershed USA recently announced the severance of its distribution agreement with Nikwax products after an 11-year relationship (May 21). During that time, the dedicated team at Watershed USA has been completely committed to offering the highest level of customer service, on-time deliveries, the best reps in the industry and the most comprehensive working knowledge of the after-market waterproofing category in the specialty outdoor market.
