tent care & maintenance
Step 1. Keep It Clean—Inside and Out
Abrasive particles of dirt can work their way into the fabric and polyurethand and silicone coatings. Rinsing or scrubbing with water and a sponge will generally do the trick. For stubborn grime, clean with Granger's G-Wash Spray Cleaner. This residue-free cleaner will not impair the application of subsequent waterproofing treatments and contains an odor eliminating component that helps keep your tent smelling fresh. NEVER machine wash a tent as the agitation within a washing machine will damage (destroy) the coating on the fabric.
Step 2: Maintain Water-Repellency and UV Protection
Maintaining the water repellency and UV protection of your tent is key to maximizing its performance in all weather conditions. Waterlogged rainflys and floors become very heavy and take a long time to dry. It is equally important to maintain the DWR (durable water repellency) of single-wall tents that are built using waterproof / breathable materials in order to maintain maximum breathabilty and UV repellency. Granger's Tent & Gear UV Waterproofing is ideal for use on synthetic tent materials.
Step 3: Dry It Right— FIGHT MOLD AND MILDEW
Dry your tent at moderate (room) temperatures--avoid direct heat. Excessive heat will damage the fabric and coatings. ALWAYS make sure your tent is completely dry before packing it away for longterm storage. Residual moisture becomes the breeding groung for mold and mildew that will attack the fabric coatings--not to mention make your tent stink! Mildew is very difficult to remove once it has formed. Our best advice is 'prevention' by simply drying before storing. An occasional spray of Granger's Odor Eliminator will freshen your tent by eliminating odor causing bacteria.
